Buying a gun online in Dallas

Order here, pick it up at a licensed dealer anywhere in the Metroplex. The best firearms buys in Dallas are the ones you compared at a live price first.

Dallas is a competition town. The metro has more pistol and 3-gun clubs than any other part of Texas, the indoor ranges run leagues on weeknights, and the parking lots on a Saturday morning are full of trucks headed to matches in Ennis, Terrell and Denton County. That shows in what sells: full-size 9mm pistols with optics cuts, CZ Shadow 2s and Canik race guns, and AR-15s built light and fast. The F1 Firearms shelf on this site is aimed squarely at that crowd. Around the edges are whitetail rifles for leases in the Cross Timbers and over-unders for the dove opener.

1. Pick your dealer
Any FFL in Dallas, Plano, Garland, Irving, Mesquite, Richardson, Frisco, McKinney or Denton that accepts shipped transfers. Ask the fee.
2. Order here
Name that dealer at checkout. We confirm the license before the firearm ships. Parts and ammunition ship to your door.
3. Paperwork
ATF Form 4473 at the counter. The dealer runs the FBI NICS check, or may accept your Texas LTC in its place.
4. Same visit
No waiting period in Texas. A clear check means you leave with the gun.

What to bring to the dealer

  • Government photo ID with your current address. If your Texas driver license shows an old one, bring a utility bill or other document the dealer accepts.
  • The transfer fee, paid to the shop. Around Dallas it is commonly $25 to $50, and a few of the big-box counters charge more. Call ahead.
  • Your order number so they can find the package.
  • Your LTC, if you have one. ATF lists it as a NICS alternative; the dealer decides whether to use it.

Dallas County rules

There are none beyond state and federal law. Local Government Code 229.001 bars cities from regulating the sale, ownership, carrying or storage of firearms and ammunition, and 236.002 does the same for counties, so Dallas, Plano, Garland, Irving, Frisco and unincorporated land all run on the Texas Penal Code. No permit to buy, no registration, no waiting period, no magazine limit. A qualifying adult 21 or older may carry a holstered handgun without a license; the DPS License to Carry is optional and still worth having for reciprocity and campus carry. Cities keep their discharge ordinances, and downtown Dallas has plenty of 30.06 and 30.07 signs on private doors, so read them.

General information, not legal advice. The statutes are collected on our Texas gun law page, and a Texas attorney can answer questions about your own situation.

Race guns and the parts to build them

If you shoot USPSA, IDPA or 3-gun anywhere in North Texas, you already know the guns: a Shadow 2 or a Canik Rival in the pistol bay, a light AR with a fast handguard and a good brake on the rifle stage. This store stocks around 150 F1 Firearms parts from its own shelf, skeletonized handguards, matched billet receiver sets, barrels, BCGs and muzzle devices, and ships the non-firearm parts straight to your Dallas address. Receiver sets go to your FFL. Pair them with a CZ or Canik pistol and you have a match bag.

Hunting around Dallas

Whitetail general season in the North Zone opens the first Saturday of November and runs into early January. The Cross Timbers west toward Jacksboro and the Blackland Prairie east toward Greenville hold plenty of deer, almost all on leased or permission-only private land, and a .270, .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor bolt gun covers it. Feral hogs are on every creek bottom and need no license on private land. Dove opens September 1 and quail in late October on the Rolling Plains northwest of Wichita Falls. TPWD publishes the seasons in the Outdoor Annual each August; the hog and deer rifle guide covers calibers.

Common questions

Can I buy a gun online and pick it up in Dallas?

Yes. Order here, name a licensed dealer anywhere in Dallas, Collin, Denton, Rockwall or Kaufman County, and the firearm ships to them. You complete Form 4473 and the background check at their counter.

What do I need to bring?

A valid government photo ID showing your current address, the dealer transfer fee, and your order number. Bring your Texas LTC if you have one; it can stand in for the NICS call if the dealer chooses to use it.

How long does a transfer take in Dallas County?

Usually one visit. Most NICS checks answer in minutes and Texas has no waiting period. The large shops along the LBJ corridor and in Plano process a lot of transfers, so a quick call to book a pickup time saves waiting.

Does Dallas have its own gun laws?

No. Local Government Code 229.001 preempts city firearm regulation, so Dallas, Plano, Irving and the rest of the metro follow state law on purchase, possession and carry. Cities keep control of discharge inside city limits and of their own buildings, and a business can post the 30.05, 30.06 or 30.07 notice on its own door.

Do I need a permit to buy a handgun in Dallas?

No. Texas has no purchase permit and no registration. Dealers sell handguns to buyers 21 and older and long guns to buyers 18 and older, provided you are not prohibited under Penal Code 46.04 or federal law.

Where do I apply for a License to Carry?

Online with the Texas Department of Public Safety, not at a county office. You take the class with a DPS-certified instructor, apply on the DPS site, and schedule fingerprints with the DPS vendor at one of the many locations around the metro. A license is optional for qualifying adults since September 2021; see our License to Carry guide.

Where can I shoot near Dallas?

The metro has dozens of indoor ranges from Dallas out through Plano, Frisco, Garland and Arlington, plus outdoor rifle ranges to the north and east. LBJ National Grasslands near Decatur, about an hour northwest, offers public land, though target shooting there is limited to designated areas. Check each range on caliber, rapid fire and steel before you go.

Can I hunt near Dallas?

Yes. Whitetail and hogs run through the Blackland Prairie farms east and south of the city and the Cross Timbers to the west, almost all on private land by lease or permission. Dove opens September 1 in the North Zone, and the sunflower and milo fields around Ennis, Waxahachie and Greenville are the classic openers. LBJ National Grasslands and TPWD public hunting units need a hunting license and the Annual Public Hunting permit.
